A major figure in the world of photography, Joel Sternfeld is noted for his large-format color photographs that chronicle America. Sternfeld's projects explore the possibility of a collective American identity by documenting ordinary people and places throughout the country. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including two Guggenheim Fellowships and a Prix de Rome. Sternfeld is the author of thirteen books including American Prospects (1987) and Walking the High Line (2001), which proved to be pivotal in saving the elevated railroad and transforming it into a park. His work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is represented by Luhring Augustine Gallery, New York City. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College.
