Item Description

"Cube on Cube" is an original acrylic sculpture 15 inches in height dated 2008. Included with the piece is a copy of "Art in Flight: The Sculpture of John Safer."

The quality of "Cube on Cube" is not apparent at first glance. Simple described, it consists of two transparent cubes, differing only in their relative positions.

As one looks more carefully, seeing the sculpture from changing points of view, more and more shapes begin to appear. The flow of light as it passes through each element, bending and reflecting back and forth, gliding from one cube to the other, reveals an almost endless series of contours.

Gazing at "Cube on Cube" can have an almost hypnotic effect as the refractions and reflections interact to create forms within forms within forms. It is, perhaps, the unending complexity of growing from the simplest of shapes that is the inherent strenght of the sculpture.

John Safer has had a unique career. An internationally renowned sculptor throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, Safer at the same time was a successful entrepreneur who went on to become a major figure in banking. In the field of art, the New York Times compared Safer's position as a sculptor to that of Georgia O'Keeffe as a painter and Ansel Adams as a photographer. His works today stand in over one thousand private collections and public sites and have been exhibited in museums, galleries and embassies throughout the world.
