Item Description

In the pastoral setting of a quiet meadow, the Blessed Virgin presents her Child to the world. Three shepherds witness the arrival of the Prince of Peace, while blue birds trill a joyous welcome and the glow of the rising morning sun awakens the world to the dawn of a new age. In this visual poem, Mary, the angel Gabriel, and the Christ-child are encircled by a rich tapestry of multi-hued nature: from the luxuriant green carpet of grass and the golden sky to the grazing animals and symbolic bluebirds of happiness in the spreading branches of the trees. The adoration is clearly a masterpiece of Hedi's Unique "poetical" style, yet it is also representative of the Primitivist school and tradition dating back to the break-away Impressionists of the turn of the century. The careful line work, sharp profiles, two-dimensional figures, absence of open space and daring use of color, for example, are reminiscent of works by Rousseau and Gauguin. More than a century elapsed between the creation of the first Koenigszelt porcelain and the issuance of "The Adoration," the first limited-edition collector plate to bear the hallmark of Koenigszelt, Bavaria. "The Adoration" is dated 1979, is the first plate from a series of 8 plates of Hedi Keller Christmas, measures 9.5" dia. and is numbered 8816. In mint condition.
