Item Description

Science is about so much more than biology, physics, and chemistry.  It's about how we walk, grow our food, and package products.  It's about why a table has four legs and how to design a system for cooling our house. Science is everywhere.  Kids are asking questions and need a place where they can develop their tools for finding answers. KSL is that place.

By engaging kids (2-12) with the hands-on science they love early and with regular frequency year round, we will enable a generation of amazing critical thinkers, regardless of their future careers. All classes are based on core science principles that are framed as questions that your kids ask you everyday.   As Einstein says, "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking."

Young children are innovators full of excitement, creativity, and curiosity about the world around them.  Yet by the time they reach junior high school, most will have closed the door to science forever because they believe it is too hard, boring, or just not cool.   We can do better.

Unfortunately science in the U.S. has taken a backseat to math, reading, and test preparation in schools for a host of complex reasons.  Despite being "liked" by 75% of 5th graders, second only to physical education, the data on the state of science education is scary:

  • The average child in the U.S. spends less than 1 hour a week on science in school
  • 1 out of 6 elementary teachers spend zero (0) minutes on science a week
  • 40% of science teachers and 50% of school districts say they are uncomfortable or ill prepared to teach science
  • Since 1980, the number of bachelor's degrees in engineering awarded in the U.S. has declined by 30%.

Looking at how poorly our schools are engaging youth in science and the lack of real opportunities to learnscience, outside of museum exposure, it's no wonder the U.S. 15-yr olds recently placed 21st in Science Literacy and 25th in Math (PICA 2006).  This doesn't begin to speak to the deficiency in critical thinking, design, and problem solving, that can be directly attributable to lack of hands-on science experiences that begin with toddlers.  We can do so much better by allowing kids to explore, discovery, and investigate.

Science is important. At KSL, we are providing an opportunity for your child to learn the context necessary for a firm science and problem solving foundation.   Kids learn from experience, not explanation. We have designed an unique LIFES Curriculum, that is inquiry based and engages kids curiosity about their world.
