A note from the ASC President, Sandy Andrew

The Annisquam Cookbook was first published by the Sewing Circle in 1940. Three editions followed, in 1942, 1945 and 1972. Those of us who have one or more of these versions treasure them.

This Book, A Circle of Recipes, is a collection of favorite recipes from the current Sewing Circle members. We make no claims of originality, though many of the recipes are indeed the creation of their contributors, and some have been handed down through several generations of “Squamers”. “Favorites” is the key word for this collection.

When we embarked on this endeavor, we knew we were taking on quite a project. Never having published a cookbook before, I started looking for a publisher and found an excellent one named Morris Press Books. And, most importantly, we discovered that one of our members had been in the cookbook publishing business in New York City. Her name is Cynthia Borghesani and with her expertise and guidance, this book became a reality within 5 months’ time, a truly unbelievable accomplishment.

The success of any endeavor of this magnitude requires the input and cooperation of many people. We are deeply indebted to the Testers and the Tasters who actually made the recipes and gained a few pounds for the cause. The Committee spent countless hours in the design process, the graphics, the photography, the proofing and the typing.

The Annisquam Sewing Circle is the direct descendant of the Annisquam Female Benevolent Society, which was the inspiration of Miss Eunice Fellows of ‘Squam in 1837. Its mission was “for the performance of acts of benevolence”. Today, 175 years later, the mission of the Circle remains much the same. Although we no longer knit nippers to protect fishermen’s fingers from icy hemp hand-lines, many still craft gift items for sale at our Christmas Fair. Proceeds from this Fair and our annual Plant Sale which is going to be held Saturday, May 26th from 8 to 11 a.m., are donated to various Annisquam and Cape Ann charities. Every year we give a scholarship to graduating Annisquam area seniors who have put their request in writing to us. It should be noted that over the last 8 years, the Annisquam Sewing Circle has raised over $110,000, $95,000 of which has been given to local charities.
