Item Description
Commemorative print of the U.S.S. Callaghan from the estate of a sailor who survived the sinking of the ship. This is a prized piece for the collector of World War II memorabilia, particularly Naval history. The U.S.S. Callaghan was a Fletcher-class destroyer launched on Aug. 1, 1943, and named after Rear Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan, who was killed in action in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. On July 28, 1945, off the coast of Okinawa, the ship was hit by a Japanese suicide pilot in what was the last kamikaze attack on a ship in WWII. The impact set fire to antiaircraft ammunition onboard, resulting in fires and explosions that hindered rescue. The ship sank, leaving the crew afloat in shark infested waters; 47 lives were lost. One of the survivors, who lived in New Alexandria, purchased this handsome print by artist Patrick E. Sullivan when he attended the 50-year reunion of survivors.
The print is a limited edition of 300. Framed size: 28x24 inches; image 17x11 inches.
