Item Description
This one-of-a-kind wall hanging is a hand crafted Haitian mask. This wall piece, which measures approximately 10" x 22", comes directly from Haitian Metal Art and was created from upcycled - recycled 50 gallon steel drums. The artists used a special technique for their pieces. Both ends of the drum are removed and placed inside of the remaining cylinder along with scrap paper, dried banana or sugar cane leaves. It is set on fire, to burn off any paint or residue. When cooled, the drum is cut down the side and flattened out to create a "metal canvas" upon which the design is drawn. Using hammer, chisel and other various tools, the shape is cut and the intricate decorative patterns are pounded into the metal, creating a unique and treasured piece of art. The hair was fashioned by twisting the ends of cut metal. The finished design is coated with a protective finish and can be hung indoors or outdoors.
