Item Description
Santa Acrylic on Cypress Tree Root 21" x 6" x 5"
Item Special Note
This beautiful Santa Acrylic on Cypress Tree Root is by artist Phyllis Pastore (2011)
The Cypress tree grows in swamps and bayous in the Southern U.S.
As the tree matures, the root system grows out of the water or ground
in such a manner that is described as one of nature's sculptures. These
formations are called "knees". The knees are harvested by boat, without
any damage to the mother tree itself. The cypress three forms a new knee,
which is harvested again in a short period of time. The mystique of each knee
is its unique appearance.
The originality of each Santa is dependent on the shape and size of the root. Designing begins with sketching the face and beard. From there, the fur and coat are fashioned with great pride and attention to detail. The bumps and indentation of the wood allow for the creative options of trees, bags, and toys. The final painting of the Santa face brings alive each Santa's unique personality, each an original work of art.
