FIRSTWORKS presents world-class performing arts programs that build the cultural, economic, and educational vitality of our community. They connect internationally recognized artists with new audiences in major downtown Providence venues, and engage them with under-resourced schools across our state. Their programs have featured first-time in Providence appearances by Yo-Yo Ma/the Silk Road Ensemble and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, to name a few.
2012 -2013 Program Highlights Include:
FirstWorks Festival: On the Plaza 2012
Over 100 local, national and international performing artists in the heart of Providence, RI. FirstWorks launches a signature tourism event in partnership with the City of Providence’s Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Greater Kennedy Plaza and 18 other arts organizations. (September 29)
New Media Arts: Pixilerations v. 9
Nine days of exhibitions and performances using new media including interactive electronics, web technology and the moving image. The ninth annual Pixilerations showcase gathers groundbreaking works from the liveliest minds in digital media, music and art.
The Joffrey Ballet
America’s “top” company, makes their first-ever RI appearance in March 2013 as part of a city-wide celebration featuring the Joffrey’s 100th anniversary reconstruction of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Lectures on art, reconstruction; master class; and performance by 46-dancer company, with world premiere at PPAC. (March 2013)
Jazz superstar Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
A festival of music and swing dance. This public performance at the Vets culminates a 3-month statewide education project. (January 2013.)
