Item Description
The Danube Bicycle Path tour offers nearly carefree cycling and an ideal way to view the region. You start in Passau, Germany, the "City of Three Rivers," where the Inn and Ilz rivers flow into the Danube. Then it's downstream all the way, passing through picturesque towns and villages and across lush farmland. It's on paved dedicated bicycle paths nearly the entire way, following an old horse path where teams of horses once struggled to tow barges upstream. Along the majestic river, you’ll pass romantic castles, cozy villages and sprawling vineyards. The unforgettable end of the tour is the historic Austrian capital, Vienna, with its countless sights.
While any bicycle tourist will enjoy the tour, it’s ideal for first-timers. The tour is self-guided, but you’re not self-contained. Daily luggage transfers are provided so you just need to carry your daily gear. At the start, the local bike tour company meets you, fits you to your hybrid touring bikes, and provides detailed maps, cue sheets and route information. They’re just a phone call away in case of problems. You stay in charming three- and four-star hotels for the seven nights of your tour.
The route is well-marked and easy to navigate. You can almost just point your bike downstream and follow the flow! To shorten a day's riding, you can often roll your bike aboard a train or ship along the way.
