Item Description

Monday Night at the Movies:  Five Film Noir Classics

Film noir is the genre designation coined by  French critics describing certain American movies, made during and after World War II, through the 1950’s, reflecting many of the tensions in society in that time period.  These films share many stylistic and thematic commonalities and  have antecedents in  European cinema of the 20’s and 30’s.
Each session will consist of a brief introduction to a film, a film viewing on large-screen TV,  followed by a  group discussion.

Facilitator:  Barbara McGrew

Barbara Bordwell McGrew holds Master’s Degrees in English and Organizational Development.  A long-time student and lover of film, she has participated in many film groups including the Key Cinema Club, and the Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Film.  She was a member of the Board of the Vermont International Film Festival for three years and its Vice-President. She has also taught film at Burlington College and, at present, is involved  in the beginning of the Burlington Film Society as well as producing a documentary about  recent immigrants to Vermont.
