Tesserae: recycled materials: corrugated boxes, mirror, stained glass

"I work primarily with recycled materials. I enjoy the treasure hunt of seeking out interesting materials, shapes and textures from among what others find worthless.

I love the alchemy of transforming an ordinary, everyday corrugated box into something new and extraordinary - simply by exposing the colors and textures hidden within.

I started creating shadowboxes from corrugated boxes because these boxes are easy to find, easy to cut, lightweight and very sturdy. Once I had built the structure from corrugated, I would then cover the surfaces with recycled papers. But I soon became fascinated with the corrugations and the slivers of cross sections that accumulated on my work table. After I peeled, sliced and dissected the corrugated boxes – I would take these pieces and re-arrange them to create new and exciting patterns and abstract designs.

One of the things I love about working with corrugated is how easy it is to cut and glue into place. But in recent years I've been learning to cut and shape glass and stone, experimenting with combining corrugated with these traditional mosaic materials. Now that I am looking, I'm amazed at how much glass and stone material is available to be diverted from the local landfills! One of my favorite dumpsters has 'marble only' stenciled on it."
