Nancy Callan’s whimsical, large-scale sculptures, which combine extraordinary technical expertise with innovative design, are inspired by the forms, colors and patterns of nature.
Nancy brings a sense of fun and high energy to her work, and we expect her Residency to be a highlight of the Museum’s holiday season. In addition to working on new sculptural designs, Nancy plans to revisit her series of life-size glass snowmen. “The Museum of Glass is one of the only facilities where I can blow glass at such a large scale—the fantastic team and great equipment definitely inspire me to push the boundaries!”
Nature is the muse for many artists. Nancy does not attempt to mimic nature but to create new hybrids of form, color and pattern. The fantastic shapes and markings found in insects, birds, flowers and sea creatures often seem implausible, but Nancy is drawn to these unusual creatures, and interprets their flamboyance and ambiguity in sculpture.
