Item Description
For more than 40 years, Swedish artist Bertil Vallien has been an innovator of contemporary glass art. Through his command of the material, he beckons the viewer to explore a deeper dimension and awareness of life’s truths. Every sculpture conceals an existential or mythical story about life, love and/or death.
The term “sand-cast glass” has come to be inextricably linked with Bertil. He took up this historically industrial technique and developed it as a method for creating glass sculptures. He continues to explore its possibilities, enhancing his artistic range and generating countless cycles of themes and motifs. Bertil’s series vary from metaphysical boats, torsos and monoliths to his broad, narrow slabs of glass that resemble runic stones that appear to contain prehistoric archaeological finds.
