As you take in the glories on display in this horticultural wonderland, be sure to visit the Cherry Esplanade, a broad green field bordered by two allées of the dazzling Prunus 'Kanzan'. One of the highlights of the cherry blossom season, these double-flowering cherries are a centerpiece of the Garden’s annual cherry blossom festival, Sakura Matsuri. The esplanade is the only part of the Garden where visitors can sit on the grass, and you can enjoy special summer picnic nights.

You won't want to miss the Children's Garden, where, since 1914, children have been growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs and learning firsthand about the natural world. With a focus on greening the urban environment through education, sustainable practices, and stewardship, Brooklyn Botanic Garden encourages young people to be participants, not just spectators, in community horticulture and conservation.

Step into another place and time in the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, one of the oldest and most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside Japan. It is a blend of the ancient hill-and-pond style and the more recent stroll-garden style, in which various landscape features are gradually revealed along winding paths. The garden features artificial hills contoured around a pond, a waterfall, and an island while carefully placed rocks also play a leading role. Among the major architectural elements of the garden are wooden bridges, stone lanterns, a viewing pavilion, the Torii or gateway, and a Shinto shrine.

If you have a heart for romance, you'll feel right at home in the Cranford Rose Garden, one of the most popular attractions since 1928. In June, when the roses are in full bloom, tens of thousands of roses cascade down arches, climb up lattices, clamber over the pavilion, and pose in formal beds. Here, in one of the largest collection of rose cultivars in North America, over 5,000 bushes of nearly 1,400 varieties thrive. The Cranford Rose Garden is a repository for heritage roses both old and modern and some of the classes on display include wild species, old garden roses, hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, polyanthas, hybrid perpetuals, climbers, ramblers, and miniatures. Some of the original roses planted in 1927 are still in the garden today!

Growing from its humble beginnings as an ash dump in the late 1800s, Brooklyn Botanic Garden has come to represent today the very best in urban gardening and horticultural display.
