Allison Hilton Jones
I began my career as a high school chorus teacher and musical director. Eventually I found myself in a beginning metals class at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. When my very first jewelry instructor (who turned 90 during the course of the class) saw my very first jewelry design his response was, “The world has gone to hell!”
When I’m asked about the inspiration behind my work, I never know what to say. I feel like I should make up a brilliant story about some divine awakening of my creative spirit! But I think that the inspiration comes from the form itself. A shape in the architecture of a building, the print of a tablecloth or the face of one of my pets will bury itself deep in my mind and emerge later in one of my pieces, unidentifiable even to me.
The ability to sketch something on paper and then make it come to life in three dimensions with my hands is what drives my work and is why I’m drawn to hollow forms in my jewelry. While, “The world has gone to hell” wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, if my jewelry can evoke that level of emotion in someone who sees it, I can’t ask for anything more.
