Item Description

This iconic SAVE BLACK MESA poster shows Leroy Keams of the American Indian Movement protesting the strip mining on Black Mesa, Navajo Reservation, in April 1971.  The protest in which this photograph was taken is described by historian Alston Chase as the first modern-day environmental confrontational protest, having preceded Greenpeace's Amchitka nuclear protest by five months. Less than 100 of the original posters currently exist.  After forty years a few original posters in new condition are available.  This one is signed by the photographer, Marc Gaede. Gaede was the Photographer-in-Residence 1978-79 at the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, where he had the opportunity to work with W. Eugene Smith.
