This was done without any radio airplay or the release of a music video . The album eventually sold over six million copies in the United States and has since been certified 6x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA Award). Master of Puppets marks the last Metallica album with bassist Cliff Burton , who was killed in a bus accident while on tour to promote the album. Master of Puppets is considered one of the greatest thrash metal albums of all time. The album was released on March 3, 1986 through Elektra Records .
