Item Description

Ranked (4).  Straddling the Allegheny River Valley, Oakmont Country Club was introduced in 1903 by designer and U.S. Amateurs qualifier, Henry Fownes.   The club has hosted twenty national championships, and more major championships than any other course in the U.S., including eight United States Opens, five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, and two U.S. Women’s Opens.  The course itself is infamous for its complexity, has been regarded by many professionals to be one of the most difficult courses in the country.  With tight fairways, 210 deep bunkers, and most notably, slick, fast greens, it is no wonder that Oakmont’s reputation preceeds itself.  Oakmont has recently gone through a tree cutting restoration program, restoring the course to its original condition.

A young, notable course, sitting atop a mesa in a mountain setting, is Pikewood National Golf Club. just outside of Morgantown, WV, Pikewood  was patiently crafted over more than ten years, but it shows that all that time paid off.  A no-frills course for golf purists, designers John Raese and Robert Gwynne of Greer Industries designed their course in the tradition of old-school golf course architecture.  Voted the “Best New Private Course” in 2009 by Golf Digest Pikewood prides itself on its walking only policy, lay-of-the-land design, and incredible routings; most notably, its fifth hole, a dogleg par 5 around the deep rim of a gulch.
