Item Description

The description for this wooden prayer wheel from Nepal says of the carver and act of carving that "Intention enhances the creative force to create beauty and warmth."

The woodcarver is a well respected craftsperson in Nepal. Temples wear and need to be renewed. Ritual items as well as utensils, decorations, and wooden artwork of all kinds are needed. More than a carpenter, the carver transcends the medium to create an art both conforming and individually unique. A signature or mark is not needed. The carver is obvious to those who know.

Kirk Richmond, Far East's owner, adds the following: "The wheel is solid with no 'contained prayers' but two 'Om Mani Padme Hum' prayers carved in relief on the outside of the cylinder. Its carved posts are of the Newari tradition. The animal carved into the front is garuda. This wheel was carved by Shanta La Bhari of Patan, Nepal. Shanta and his sisters, the only women carvers I know of Nepal, also the only ones they themselves know of,  are Master Newari Wood Carvers. They carve struts and roof pieces for the temples, chariots for the festivals, and items of home decor. This piece is one they would have in their own home. Really, great people, kind and artistic. The sisters, Sharmila, Sangita and Surita, carve the Green and White Tara Goddess statues while Shanta carves the more aggressive pieces. As they tell me, 'I need to feel good to carve the Tara face, a bigger order makes me feel good.' I love this family. Last thing: Shanta is a professional. His home and shop are full of purposed wood blocks, planks, and other pieces curing and drying for carving. His pieces do not crack or split; I apply the stain here in Seattle. Currently I use Golden Pecan as pictured. I also use a rich dark Red Oak. I can send a picture of the family carving to whoever wins the auction. The Newari are the indigenous people of Nepal. They have their own language, customs and traditions that are distinct from Kathmandu culture. Kathmandu is very very old but Patan (or Lalitphur), the home of the Newari, is much older. Also, it is the Newari that have been the artists, carvers, sculpture, painters, designers, architects of the culture."
