Item Description

This is a limited edition wildlife stamp & print by John Seerey-Lester. Included is a hand-colored etching which is signed by the artists and numbered (1341/3313). The overall paper size of the etching is 6-1/2" X 9". The overall paper size is 12" X 14". It was published in 1989 . It is in great condition. Also included is the stamp and enamel pin with the same image as the etching.

Print Description—The Suitors-Wood Ducks: Of all the species of American ducks, the male wood duck displays the most exquisite plumage. As it is the drake's glowing iridescent rainbow of colorful feathers that attracts the less flamboyant female, one could say that its scientific name, Aix sponsa (a hybrid of Greek and Latin meaning "waterfowl in wedding raiment"), was aptly chosen. Wood ducks pair off in the winter grounds with the more aggressive males, which are usually larger and more radiant, winning the competition for mates. In this print, which was made for the 1989 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Conservation Stamp and Print program, two drakes are vying for the attentions of an apparently indifferent hen. The drake shown is the lucky suitor! The composition of The Suitors is designed to direct the viewer's eye diagonally downward in a half loop through the painting from the top left-hand corner to the bottom right-hand corner.
