Ian Torney is a painter, who grew up in New England and who has also lived, studied and traveled extensively in Europe. He currently lives in Concord, NH, and has served on the Fine Arts faculty at St. Paul’s School since 1991, where he was appointed as the Director of the Fine Arts Program in 1998, and the Head of the Arts Division in 2002. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College in 1986, graduating with major in Visual Art. In 1992 he earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from the Rhode Island School of Design, and he completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Art Institute of Boston in 2008. In the mid-1990’s he studied with master-painter Thomas Buechner, traveling with him several times to Europe on plein-air painting excursions, and he has studied most recently with master-painter Eric Aho. He has participated in several residencies, most notably at the New York Studio School in the summer of 1993, at the Humberside School of Art and Design in Hull, England in the summer of 1995, and at Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy in the summer of 1996. Mr. Torney has maintained a studio in Concord since moving there in 1991; and in the summer of 2010 he moved his studio to the Kimball Jenkins Estate and School of Art, where he is currently an Artist In Residence and teaches classes in plein-air painting. He actively exhibits his work annually, and is represented by the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden of Concord, NH. His paintings are included in several private and corporate collections, including most prominently: the Black Creek Group of Denver, CO; the Hemis Corporation of New York, NY; Ameriprise Financial of Concord, NH; DS Cole of Loudon, NH; The Boston Private Bank of Boston, MA; Parexel International of Wellesley, MA; and Solomon ETC Architecture of San Francisco, CA.
