Item Description

Jolly Roger (Watercolor, 30.5"W x 22.5"H), David Silveira

Native to the Mendocino coast, David has been close to the ocean all his life. He has a BA in art from California State University Hayward, and has exhibited locally for several years. Working in watercolor, his subjects vary, but focus primarily on all things relative to the coast milieu. With subtle earth tones and demure hues, he paints the effect time and the elements have had upon natural and man-made things. Variations of light, shadow and texture evoke the many somber moods of the coast.

"The challenge is to harness the intrinsic complexity of the medium in a good composition without sacrificing spontaneity. Part of it is to make natural rhythms function as part of and within the work as a whole. When a picture has interest and a degree of snap without being ostentatious, then it is, to an extent, successful."
