Item Description
Americans are fascinated by their “First Couples,” and the hallmark of Ronald and Nancy Reagan was their open affection. Reagan famously said that coming home to Nancy was like “coming out of the cold into a warm room with a fireplace.”
So when Time magazine passed on this photo – saying that the photo of the 40th president and his first lady looked “too schmaltzy” – David Hume Kennerly was surprised, and told the editors, ‘They are schmaltzy. They look adoringly at each other. That’s what they do.’ ”
The pose is pure Reagan. When Kennerly took this photograph of the romantic couple – after 30 years of marriage – they were holding hands and gazing into one another’s eyes. And the setting is pure Washington – White House window framing the foreground in the Yellow Oval Room and the Washington Monument rising in the distance. This photograph has never been published.
Item Special Note
This framed photo is signed and numbered by Kennerly. It is a 16" by 20" archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper.
