Item Description
George H.W. Bush hijacked this formal group portrait when, catching photographer David Hume Kennerly’s eye, he played the old “rabbit ears” trick on his wife, Barbara. This classic practical joke may seem incongruous in the company of two other former U.S. presidents and four former first ladies, but Barbara Bush was less than surprised: “George, won’t you ever grow up?” Kennerly recalls was her response when she found what her husband had done.
Also pictured are Lady Bird Johnson, Gerald and Betty Ford, and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, all at the rededication of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. The ceremony – conducted 16 years after the original dedication – marked the completion of a major building expansion at the museum in Grand Rapids, Gerald Ford’s hometown and seat of the congressional district he represented from 1949 to 1973.
“This picture underscores what I love about my job,” Kennerly said. “President Bush has always had a fun side to him. He took his job seriously but not himself.” Barbara Bush is evidently as fun-loving as her husband – this photograph now hangs in the living room of the Bush family home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Item Special Note
