Item Description
The nation was about to make history, inaugurating Barack Obama as the first African-American president of the United States. On January 7, 2009, just days before he was to be sworn in, Obama joined his four predecessors for a White House luncheon. The president-elect suggested the gathering, and President Bush hosted it. The men came together in the tradition of putting campaign rivalries behind and creating what Obama called “an opportunity for advice, good counsel and fellowship.”
David Hume Kennerly has documented all five occasions when five U.S. presidents have gathered in one place since the first such meeting in 1991. But this event stood out as a favorite. “This meeting was phenomenal,” Kennerly said. “Seeing President-elect Obama’s face among those other well-known presidents puts the moment into perspective.”
