Item Description

This beautifully embellished gourd can be used for decoration or as a birdhouse. It's been delicately hand painted with monkeys and leaves by artist Mary Moreau.

Mary was born and raised in East County when El Cajon was so small she could ride her horse almost anywhere around the town. Mary and her husband of 46 years live in Dehesa Valley with their dog and two horses. She has always loved the outdoors and still hikes the trails of the local mountains enjoying the sights and sounds of nature with her grandchildren. Mary’s husband, Bob, grows high-quality gourds on their ranch. The gourd garden is amazing with the individual shapes, sizes, and markings of each gourd.

Discovering gourds was such a pleasure, she says “When I hold a gourd for the first time, I feel the curves and the skin, and then I look at the variations in the color. After enjoying the uniqueness of that particular gourd, a pattern begins to form in my mind and then I enhance its natural beauty using stones, plant matter, and various dyes.”

Mary’s work has been displayed in the Falcon Gallery in Julian, California, and she was the Featured Artist of the Month at the Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery.
