Item Description

Egg Tempera/Gold Leaf, 21" x 14 1/2"

This piece is from the Diane’s House & Garden series, which focuses on sanctifying the disappearance of rural land.  It was accomplished through the medium of egg tempera, a method of working which was prominent during the early Renaissance.  Egg yolk and powdered pigments are mixed together to create a paste and then thinned with water.  The paint is applied with small brushstrokes overlaid on top of one another by crosshatching, glazing, and lines.  The frame is hand-built and gilded with 24 karat gold to emulate the tabernacle frames that once graced the altars in Renaissance churches.  The painting’s subject matter is literally “housed,” and therefore made sacred.

Diane Savino holds a BA from Westfield College, a MA Ed in Painting from Hartford Art School and an MFA from Vermont College of Norwich University. She is an award-winning artist, and has work in numerous private and public collections throughout the world. She is a former art professor and works as an independent curator who has orchestrated many exhibits for the Society of Tempera Painters.
