Item Description
The tradition of maple sugaring is deeply rooted in the rocky soils of Lunenburg, Vermont. The custom of drawing sap from the maple tree in the spring of the year and boiling it down to make sugar or syrup reaches back to the native peoples who inhabited the Green Mountains before the coming of Europeans. From the time of earliest settlement in the 1700s until the mid-20th century, sugaring was ubiquitous across the town’s –indeed, the entire state’s – landscape, with the back roads populated by Vermont mythic hill farms and most of them having a “sugar orchard” of some description. Although the number of sugarmakers declined dramatically over the decades following World War II, the tradition remains alive, and in fact is in the midst of a renaissance at the present day. A Wicked Good Run is an attempt to capture for readers, through recipes, photos and recollections, the lore and cherished memories of one town’s sugaring past and present.
