Item Description

The beautiful hand crafted Tagua Jewelry set includes a necklace, bracelet and earrings and is from Costa Rica.

Also known as vegetable ivory or ivory nut, tagua is a sustainable harvested nut from the Tagua Palm Tree that grows in tropical regions of South America. The nuts fall to the ground when they are mature, and thus harvesting does not damage the trees. After harvesting and drying the nuts are ready for carving. The grain is close and very hard, resembling the finest ivory. Artisans carve each nut individually into the desired form. Respect for the environment and their culture combine as they create this unique piece from renewable resources. Market demand for tagua products generates income for craftspeople and encourages forest preservation while creating an alternative to illegal harvesting of elephant ivory.
