Item Description
It was a busy night, ten inaugural balls in one evening. In this shot, Michelle and Barack Obama—barely in office for eleven hours—were amused to see their official photos already hanging in a gallery of U.S. presidents and first ladies at the Washington Hilton hotel. Photographer David Hume Kennerly overheard the president quip to his wife: “Now, that’s ironic.”
“That might have been the exact moment when it really started to sink in that he was the president of the United States,” says Kennerly. “I loved being there as they watched their pictures appearing to watch them!” The photograph was published in Barack Obama: The Official Inaugural Book. Her gown now hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
Item Special Note
This framed photo is signed and numbered by Kennerly. It is a 16" by 20" archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper.
