Item Description

"From the time of Abraham, an elegant clay Crater with cream burnished slip, used to mix wine and water.  Even down to the time of the Romans, all wine was fortified: similar in consistency to port wine today, so Craters, such as this example were used to water it down before serving.  for related examples see:  Amiran, R. "Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land" page 97.

Povenance: From a private collection, Maryland, aquired via Sotheby's.com from Venus antiquities Jerusalem, Israel, in 2001.  Previously excavated in Hebron.

Condition: Small chips professionally restored to crater rim and foot, the body intact and in very good condition overall.
