Item Description

Portrait.712.SSP – "In this fly I sought to pay homage to those doing battle with cancer as a portrait of beauty and strength. The cut feather wing symbolizes physical change to the body manifested as a side effect of medication or surgery. The hook symbolizes strength shown by those who take on the fight. Together, and in a form only slightly changed from what it once was, this fly rises to the challenge of catching fish (a metaphor for fighting disease,) with beauty, strength and grace, not at all unlike those close to me who have done the same."

"After 25 years of welding steel, painting and drawing I finally figured out how to combine my 2 passions - making art and fly fishing. In this new work I look to pay homage to the history of fly tying while striving toward its creative future. As with all my sculpture, furniture, and 2D work each fly I build is meant to be a one-of-kind work of art."

This fly comes framed with a 4 color mat that is embossed with the fly title. Also included are copies of pages from the artist's sketchbook that illustrate the design process and writings about this fly.

The exquisite framing for this piece was done by Liz Helwig from Framed In in Hamden, Connecticut.
