Item Description

“Tevia the Milkman”

Anatoli Kaplan's COMPLETE Album of Signed Lithographs

Autolithographs printed in black, title, introductory text by Ilya Ehrenburg, justification, table of contents and set of 25 plates incl. frontispiece, each numbered, titled and signed in Cyrillic in pencil to lower margins, copy number 63 from the edition of 125, loose in original cloth portfolio with the author's initials and the volume number on front. Size: 24¾ x 19 in. (63 x 48.5 cm.) (portfolio).

In 1961, these Lithographs were ordered by the All Union Group “Mezhdounarodnaya” and published exclusively for the Grosvenor Gallery in London. There were 125 numbered lithographs printed from the original plates on a hand press by Master Craftsman, B.I. Volodin, and under the supervision of the Editor, I.Z. Kopely.

Based on the classic Yiddish story by Sholem Aleichem (on which is based the musical play “Fiddler on the Roof”). The story concerns a Jewish Family living in the Ukraine in Tzarist Russia. The hero, Tevia the Milkman, is an ordinary Jew, neither ignorant nor learned; a homely man, full of humor and hope despite the trials and tribulations common to Jews of the time.

Tevia has five daughters, each symbolic of the tendencies of Jewish society in 19th century Russia. Although the daughters go their different ways, the family is united in affection. Many calamities befall the family; the one trial which nearly breaks Tevia is the marriage of one daughter out of the Jewish faith. A pogrom brings her back home and the family is reunited. Tevia is forced by the Tzarist police to leave the little village of Kasrilevka, where he has lived all his life, but despite his misfortunes, he sees life and people in a philosophical light and never gives up hope.

Kaplan takes many episodes and characters from the story for his lithograph which match the author’s profound sympathy and understanding of human beings and his delightful humor.
