Item Description
This basket is unique; it is given by the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame which is the first center in the country to focus on the history of women, particularly Michigan women. The basket contains a purse made of 100% cotton by tribal artists in China. It is a fair trade item. The bag measures 15 inches long by 13 inches wide. The reusable basket, in which the items are presented, measures 23 inches long and 17 inches wide.
The purse showcases one of the few preserved artisan skills of an Imperial China. The vibrant colors celebrate life.
One jar of the preserves is Katherine Dexter McCormick Mixed Berry which has tart cherries, blueberries and blackberries. It celebrates the accomplishments of Katherine Dexter McCormick who cofounded the League of Women Voters in 1920 with Carrie Chapman Catt. She devoted her wealth to contraceptive research and opening doors for women in science and engineering.
The second jar, Sojourner Truth Sweet Cherry Preserves, celebrates Sojourner Truth who was the first inductee in the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. Born into slavery, she never learned how to read or write but became a legendary crusader for emancipation and women's rights.
And of course, the signature bumper sticker - Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History
