Item Description

Have you ever felt disappointed after reading a wine review in which a wine expert described a dozen different flavors in the wine but you thought that the wine tasted simply like white (or red) wine? Or after reading a food-and-wine pairing article that tells you which foods pair with which wines without explaining why? If you have ever felt uncomfortable in a restaurant reading a multi-page wine list without knowing how to choose a wine, or how to describe to your server the style that you like, you have come to the right place!

Join us on Fridays (6:30-8:30p.m.) from January 21st to February 25th for a 6-week wine course called "Be your own Sommelier" and let’s discover the natural and sensual beauty of wine together!

Friday, January 18th (6:30-8:30p.m.): Tasting like a Pro Wine is one of the most complex beverages in the world but, in order to appreciate it, you need to know the basics!! In this class you will learn some of the most important aspects of wine; legs, body, depth, acidity, tannin and all of the other building blocks to begin your wine education.
Working as a Sommelier with guests and educating staff, Svetlana has often heard statements like, "This wine is good, because it's French", "Chilean wines are cheap, so they can't be good." "This bottle is great, because I spent $150." This 2-hour class will teach you the basic vocabulary that you will need to know in order to explore wine to its fullest. All 6 wines will be served in a blind tasting.

Friday, January 25th (6:30-8:30p.m.): Wine Language & Sommeliers SecretsThis is arguably one of the most important classes in the session especially for those under the impression that red wines taste like red wines and whites taste like whites. Svetlana will teach you how to discern different smells and flavors in wines. Extreme examples of a smoky wine, a fruity wine, a floral wine, and a wine aged in American and French oak will be selected. She will also discuss why to decant a wine, and the importance of how to serve it as well (namely at what temperature, and in what style of glass). All 6 wines will be served in a blind tasting.

Friday, February 1st (6:30-8:30p.m.): Big 6 Wine Grapes This class is intended as an introduction to other types of wine for those who already know what they like, and for those who don't to discover which varietals they enjoy most. 80 percent of the quality wines sold in this country are made from six grape varieties. We will conduct a tasting of one example of each of the 6 wine varietals from different regions of the world. You will be presented with the challenge of identifying the grape variety of the wine and asked to determine where each of the wines was produced. Most students will be amazed to discover that they CAN identify each wine just by sight and smell. Tasting the wines is just for confirmation! All 6 wines will be served blind.

Friday, February 8th (6:30-8:30p.m.): Old World & New World Calling all Label Shoppers (that is not a bad thing at all): this class is for you! This is a fun class! Every single bottle in the world WILL fall into one of two categories: Old World, or New World. Here you will compare a grape varietal grown in the "Old World" (Greater Europe) with the same varietal grown in the "New World" (The Americas, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia), and you will learn about two fundamental winemaking philosophies that a great winemaker needs to use for the creation of complex wines: the art of blending and the art of the single vineyard as well as how to differentiate the two. All 6 wines will be served blind to encourage thoughtful examination of the wine and stimulate discussion.

Friday, February 15th (6:30-8:30p.m.): Pairing Wine with Food If you always stick with the "same old, same old" when you order wine, or if you avoid being the one to choose the wine for dinner, this class is for you! Svetlana compares pairing wine and food with doing a slow dance; which do you want to take the lead; food or wine? Regardless of which you choose, when done well, the two will be in perfect harmony and will elevate each other to a new level. She will talk about wine & food pairing do's and don'ts and demonstrate the "secrets" in selecting the perfect wine for a meal. Finally the big secret of how to choose a crowd pleasing wine for a dinner party will be revealed. All 6 wines will be served blind on their own and with different food selections from a local fine dining restaurant and cheeses to encourage thoughtful examination of the pairings and stimulate discussion.

Friday, February 22nd (6:30-8:30p.m.): Pairing Wine with Exotic Chocolate and Artisan Cheese
