Item Description
Everyone celebrates something. The questions are: what do people celebrate, why and how. This interactive, interdisciplinary class will offer participants opportunities to appreciate and draw parallels, contrasts and connections between their own cultural backgrounds and traditions and the traditions, values and history of other cultures. The main objective of the class is to help students understand why the different movements in each dance are executed. The live music creates a mind and body experience that carries the dancers to a new level of consciousness. This class will bring each student closer to a harmonious understanding of how African drum and dance keeps the culture alive...and it's a lot of fun, too!
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, instructor Robin Hibbery is a keeper of cultural traditions. A devoted dancer and performer since the age of 8 and trained in a broad variety of dance styles at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and The Dance Theatre of Harlem, Robin's love for African culture and its preservation cannot be ignored. She strives to elevate and educate the public about the beauty of traditional West African Drum and Dance. As a teacher who has taught throughout the US and internationally, her goal is to help her students develop an understanding of why Africans and other people of first world cultures dance the way they do.
