Item Description

This print of a Ruddy Duck makes a wonderful holiday gift for any sportsman or collector.  The Ruddy Duck print by John S. Wilson is number 1725 of 16000 from the 1981-82 Federal Duck Stamp collection. The print is unframed and is 12 x 14 in size.  The stamp is also included.

The Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis rubida), known as Steel-head, Tough-head, and Spoon-bill for his distinctive features and famed hardiness, is a small, stocky diving duck that sits so deeply in the water, it can disappear beneath the surface almost instantaneously to elude hunters and predators. Ranging widely across the Americas, the Ruddy Duck breeds in marshes and prairie sloughs from British Columbia to northern Manitoba and south as far as southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. It migrates late in the year and winters from Chesapeake Bay to the Bahamas. from central Arizona and Illinois southward, and from southern British Columbia to Costa Rica.

John S. Wilson was born and raised in Sisseton, SD In 1979, and again in 1981, he won the South Dakota Pheasant Restoration Stamp contest and was one of two winners in a contest sponsored by the Council of Outdoor Art to promote South Dakota artists. In 1981, Wilson won the Federal Duck Stamp competition making him the only South Dakota artist ever awarded this highly coveted honor.
