RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen, a project from The Cheesecake Factory's founder David Overton, is a chef-driven restaurant that takes diners on a culinary journey of Southeast Asia with flavors from Thailand, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Oversize red doors lead into the 7,500-square-foot space where Buddhist monk and dragon sculptures watch over this timber temple. (Ask to be seated next to one of the water walls that line the indoor-outdoor patio.) Chef/co-owner Mohan Ismail hails from Singapore and boasts experience in the kitchens of Spice Market, Tabla and Blue Hill in New York. He periodically changes up the menu with new dishes, but mainstays include starters like lacquered barbecue ribs with chili-caramel sesame glaze and Vietnamese summer rolls stuffed with shrimp, pork and mint. Family-style main dishes range from Singapore Mapo Tofu with chicken, soy, sesame and chili oil to tender Vietnamese duck curry to roasted Thai Chilean sea bass with pea shoots, chilies, soy, lime and sweet rice wine. Tempting desserts include the coconut doughnuts with passion fruit sauce and crème brûlée with ginger, sweet corn and black sesame. Slake your thirst with a Southeast Asian beer or an exotic cocktail such as the signature RockSugar mojito muddled with lime, cilantro, shiso and mint.
