Savoy recently reissued this, the last of Woody Shaw's studio recordings. The set list is unusual for those familiar with Woody mostly from his 1970s/early 1980s solo dates, which featured his own compositions, often wide open modal vehicles. In this case, the emphasis is on standards (except for Turre's "Steve's Blues").

The band is very tight, with longtime Shaw sideman Turre joining him on the frontline and Lightsey, Drummond, and Allen in the rhythm section. To my years, the playing is, while upbeat and joyful (a quality I find in most of Shaw's playing), rather less intense and freewheeling than his earlier work. In comparison with the Woody Shaw Live disks or his Columbia work, Shaw sounds less adventurous - not less confident, not less competent, just a little more constrained. I honestly prefer his earlier disks, but the playing is nonetheless excellent, and for fans of Woody Shaw like me, this was a most welcome discovery when it was reissued. The reissue of Shaw's other mid-80s 32 Jazz set, Solid, is scheduled to come out on Savoy on October 14th, and I'm planning on picking it up.
