Item Description

A play with marionettes is a wonderful way of bringing a story to life, or illustrating common life experiences and situations. Fairy tales often center around human encounters and destinies and make good plays--or you can make up your own. In any play, it is the marionettes that keep children enthralled. If you use simple figures and use different colors to identify different characters, then a child's imagination will take over and fill in the rest. Telling a story with moving puppets is a skill that takes practice. Warmly creative adults inspire the same qualities in the children around them, and invite the listener into a world of "once upon a time".

Mama Marionette is one step from standing dolls, as playing with them requires more nimble fingers and the dexterity that comes with practice and age. For this reason, it is most suitable for an Adult or older children.

Baby Marionette, in contrast to the Mama marionette, is the marionette which children use, and has only one loop to make it easy to move. The strings lie loosely across the open palm of small hands so that the figure can be guided gently through the landscape.

It is designed to be faceless to give children to have space to imagine their expression.

As material, Silk is an ideal fabric for these marionettes, as it has a floating quality.

Hand sewn by New Amsterdam parent, Mayuka Nobuta and grandparent, Phyllis von Herrlich
