Follow the Steps of Women Who Stepped out of Bounds
A Walk in Greenwich Village, Topped with a Drink at a Classic Bar
Kathleen Hulser, riot professor at the New School, has collected stories and sites of radical actions from Greenwich Village's spotty and rowdy past. In the early years, bohemians fought for the vote, wore daring short haircuts, and drank in public. In later years, people like Catholic worker activist Dorothy Day, anti-war poet Grace Paley and Black Panther Angela Davis all did time at the Women's House of Detention. Other gals, like political activist Elizabeth Irwin and playwright Lorraine Hansberry wrote fiery words and hung out in Village girl bars.
Take a walk and end with a drink in a historic gathering spot for unruly women. You weren't always good, were you?
