Artist's Statement: When I was asked by the Washingtonian Magazine to create a work of art in commemoration of the inaurguration of President Barack Obama, I began immediately, post-poning other projects, determined to advance the work I had already completed for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
I first went back and revisited Sea to Shining Sea, studying the forms and symbols within the original piece, but also going back further, reviewing my earlier drawings and prints, seeking a current of thought and feeling to lead me toward a resolution that could accompany this remarkable moment in history - a moment defined less by Barack Obama as the first African-American President, and more by the role our President has had in bringing so any people from so many different backgrounds together.
Viewing the finished work I hope that this vision of a more unified, more equal America is clear. Seeing the birds in flight out of the shadows, moving upwards to share in a world of joy and happiness, I hope the viewer finds inspiration to guide him or her through his or her own struggle for self-enrichment, his or her own pursuit of happiness.
Since the days of the 1960's, I've hoped that these ideals of equal opportunity would become our nation's enduring legacy, and I am truly grateful that my art might serve as an expression of our United States and accompany you as we together as a nation soar into the light.
