Artist Bio: ALONZO, The Art and The Man
Alonzo's career as an artist began anew, some years ago when he picked up his sketchpad and started sketching the faces of strangers in the deep recesses of restaurants and on the streets of the Washington, DC area. Alonzo likes the naturalness of the unsuspecting person for his models. In addition, he has the freedom of movement; the ability to casually walk into any restaurant, sits down, pick out an interesting face and start sketching. To facilitate this approach, Alonzo takes to graphite for his medium. To
improve his skills in sketching, painting and sculpture, Alonzo has taken several courses in sculpture, drawing, and painting anatomy at the Washington Studio School in Georgetown.
Alonzo is accomplished in several different art forms. In addition to his skills as a fine artist, Alonzo makes and teaches film, and holds a Sondan (third degree black belt) ranking as a teacher of the martial art form, Aikido. He has a M.F.A. Degree in Film Directing from Columbia University, New York City.
As a fine artist, Alonzo is drawn to faces of people because the face expresses so much about the person inside. He feels his challenge is to discover and interpret the essence of the person behind the mask, in each of his drawings.
Alonzo can be commissioned for portraits, and invites those interested to contact him for details and comments.
