Item Description
Saggar-Fired Pottery
Dimensions: 10" H x 7" W
To create a smooth surface, I hand burnish each vessel, apply a coat of fine clay slip called terra sigilata, and then bisque fire the vessel.
Next I cover the vessel with ferric chloride and other organic materials such as bark or sawdust. Then I wrap the pottery in an aluminum foil saggar (container) and fire the vessel a second time to 1200 degrees F.
There are no glazes on these pieces. Each piece is unique.
Item Special Note
Saggar-fired ware is fragile, porous, and unsuitable for functional use.
