"Minor-league hockey is more raw and more personal."
The San Francisco Bulls, are the latest addition to the sports landscape in San Francisco. In their inaugural season, which opened on October 3rd, 2012 against the Stockton Thunder, the Bulls are currently in third place, right in the middle of the pack of the ECHL Pacific Division. The Bulls play their home games at the Cow Palace (former home of their NHL affiliate, the San Jose Sharks), which is right on the Daly City-San Francisco border.
Prior to the opening of the season, the San Jose Sharks announced an affiliation agreement with the Bulls— whereby the Bulls will be a feeder team to the Sharks. With the NHL still in lock-down the growing Bulls fan base can look forward to a full season of familiar faces performing breakaways, speeding through power plays, and like other hometown teams move from the center of the pack to the top of their division.
The official fan club is called the Matadors. It is run by Rocky and Shelly Barbanica of Pacifica. Many of the fans remember it has been 16 years without hockey at what Rocky calls "the Cathedral,"—officially The Cow Palace. The Sharks also played two seasons there (1991-92 and 1992-93), and the San Francisco Spiders of the International Hockey League played there for 1995-96 season before folding.
To accommodate the Bulls, the team spent $2 million installing a new ice system and a custom-made 360-degree wraparound LED video scoreboard with its game presentation system and ten sets of speaker arrays. The center hung video board has a 360 degree view for game presentation and full timekeeping and statistics. The new Colosseo Cube scoreboard, had to be custom built by Colosseo USA because of the weight limitations on the 70-year-old building's roof. The Cow Palace made steel support beams and installed them in the rafters to help provide the additional support.
So if you want to “act like you got a pair”, and join the teddy-bear flinging as the puck crosses the line, the goal light comes on, and the referee signals goal, this is the item for you.
