Item Description

"Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Claret, as its British-derived name implies, is made in the same style as Bordeaux's finest Medoc type wines. A Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine blended in a Bordeaux style, this wine exhibits an exceptional depth and truly unique flavors. In honoring the authenticity and heritage of wines made in this style by the Captain Niebaum himself from California Vineyards dating back to 1910, we call our wine - Claret."

Claret is a term that was originally coined by the British to describe Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines such as Bordeaux, or those made in a similar style. Since the inception of the Diamond Collection in 1996, Claret has been the flagship wine of the brand. We use all five Bordeaux varietals in our blend—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot—and harvest grapes from our own estate as well as other Napa, Sonoma and El Dorado vineyards. This combination of climates results in great complexity and exquisite balance. Our Claret bottle is also distinguished with gold netting in order to convey its prestigious status, a tribute to the way Europe’s finest wines were once presented. 2009 was an excellent vintage that featured only light spring rain, warm summer weather and no abrupt climate changes at season’s end. This allowed us to be highly selective during harvest, choosing the very best fruit only when completely ripe. The result of these amazing conditions is a perfectly balanced and elegantly textured wine with supple tannins, rich fruit concentration and alluring notes of spice and wood.
