Item Description

Clay with bronze metal coating & patina, 18"high on a 11 3.4" wide base

Judy Britain does figurative clay sculpture and portraits as well as pastel paintings. For her, art’s essence is communicating feelings and perceptions. A graphic design major at the University of Cincinnati, she learned to communicate through design and for the thirty years took a pragmatic business approach to art: advertising, marketing and consulting. In 2000, Judy redirected her focus to a full time pursuit of art. Her abundant energy now bursts forth from her sculptures and pastels. It took Judy a while to uncover her connection with clay. She began weaving baskets and creating figures in paper mache. Then she found clay. “When I put my hands into wet clay, something takes over.” Judy brings clay to life with exacting detail and flowing motion - the sway of a skirt, the start of a smile, the gesture of a hand. Her characters are warm, accessible and welcoming. Expanding into other media, Judy transferred her experience in sculpture to painting in acrylic and pastel. The warmth of her sculptures reemerges in the paintings. Judy’s commissioned work includes portraits and other figures in clay. Her work can be seen in public and private collections and has been included in exhibitions and juried shows in the Chattanooga area since 2000.
