Jennie Kirkpatrick: “My work reflects both the cultural influences and my studies in all the places I have lived. Two years in Japan, with a focus on surface patterns, asymmetrical balance, and study with a master woodblock printmaker, influenced my choosing printmaking as a medium while in graduate school at George Washington University. The Japanese influence combined with the silk screen process produced the serigraphs that were my area of concentration for an MFA degree. Three years in Tunisia presented me with new patterns, exotic marketplaces, nomadic Bedouins, and bright sunlight which informed my next body of work. Back in Tennessee, I taught at some area universities and colleges; art appreciation, art history, drawing and design allowed me to bring to students my own perspective of the places I had visited, and teaching was yet another growth period. When asked to paint murals, I embarked on fourteen years of murals and elaborate wall finishes. Because of my husband's naval career, travel has always been a part of my life, and trips with other painters in recent summers have produced many watercolors of Italy and Spain, as well as genre painting (people in everyday scenes). A husband, two children, and four grandchildren provide subject matter that is close to my heart.
