Juanita Tumelaire is an experienced artist, educator and arts advocate. She has twice been awarded the Elizabeth Morse Genius Award for printmaking and recently received the Association of Visual Arts Lifetime Board Achievement Award. She is currently developing curriculum and consulting with Chattanooga’s Print Cooperative which will offer printmaking, letterpress printing and book arts in the spring. Juanita’s current work combines original narratives and prints into limited edition fine art books. Her book, “Hari Kuyo, One” has been included in 1000 Artists’ Books published in June 2012.
Each of the colors in the two relief prints in ArtStart required the carving of a separate block. Once the first block was inked and printed, the second block was carved and inked with a different color and printed over or juxtaposed with the image made by the first block. Thus, these prints required a separate block to be carved and printed for each color. The objects in each of these prints responds to parts of the world in conflict, which is why the titles are descriptors.
